“I have sailed many seas, landed at foreign ports, guided on a steady course to reach safely, the harbor of 75 years”
Eva Edelstein, 2002
Eva Bamberger married Edelstein, born on June 23, 1927 in Lichtenfels, died on August 22, 201 at the age of 92 in Monroeville, Pennsylvania.
After a carefree childhood in Lichtenfels before the Nazi dictatorship, her parents sent her to a boarding school in Italy in 1938 to protect her from the harassment and attacks of the Nazis. In the same year, she emigrated to England with her family. In 1948, she moved with her parents to Charleston, South Carolina, where her older sister Anna had moved with her husband.
In 1952, Eva met the future rabbi Jason Z. Edelstein and married him. They lived together in Williamsburg, Virginia (1952-1953); Cincinnati, Ohio (1953-1958); Honolulu, Hawaii (1958-1960); and Monroeville, Pennsylvania from 1960 until her death. The couple had three children and five grandchildren.
Eva was a classically trained ballerina who performed with the London Ballet Company and later in Charleston, South Carolina. Eva began teaching ballet in Cincinnati, Ohio, and later became the first yoga teacher in the Pittsburgh area when she began teaching classes in her childhood home in 1970.
Eva was a pioneer in consumer protection and helped found and expand the Alliance for Consumer Protection. In 1966, Eva was invited to the White House by President Johnson to be honored for her role in implementing Truth in Packaging legislation.
In her 70's and 80's, Eva explored her spiritual and artistic inclinations through various classes and personal expressions, best reflected in her watercolor paintings and calligraphy.
